Stewy von Wattenwyl's WABASH

Stewy von Wattenwyl Hammond B-3

Is a Jazzband still allowed to swing? May the blues - the root of all jazz styles - still be audible? Not only, but also! And if, then as strong as possible! With this idea four outstanding swiss musicians found together into a captivating collective around the good old Hammond B-3 organ. They keep exploring the possibilities of this unusual cast with organ, drums and two horns: Pulsating collective improvisations, concerted arrangements and reduction on solo, duo or trio parts create a extremely dynamic band sound.

Though or because (?) the music has mostly been composed and arranged by the members of the band and some top talented contemporaries it is versatile and coherent. In Daniel Woodtli’s wonderful «Ghost-Bell» Gospel elements can be heard. Alex Hendriksen’s «Just Like History» reminds one of Pat Methenys latin tinge as well as Stewy von Wattenwyl’s «Recovery» of Horace Silver’s hardbop. All this doesn’t make too much sense if intoxicating solo flights would not add the nessessary fire or the required intimacy and contemplation.
